How HireOSS works
How we score
Every score in HireOSS is built from your scorecard and the evidence in front of the model. This page explains the rules, so you can check any score you see.

01Attributes
- Each role has a scorecard: the attributes the job needs, such as a skill, a kind of experience or a way of working.
- You write the attributes, or draft them from the job description and edit them.
- Each attribute has a description. That description is the text the candidate is scored against, so a vague description gives a vague score.
- Each attribute is scored from 0 to 5.
02Weights
- Every attribute has a weight, and the weights on a scorecard add up to 100.
- The weight is what the attribute is worth. A 4 out of 5 on an attribute worth 30 earns 24 of its 30 points.
- The overall score is the weighted average of the attributes that were assessed. Attributes the evidence did not cover are left out, not counted as zero.
03Evidence rules
- A score must rest on evidence: a quote from the transcript or the CV. Click a score to see the quote behind it.
- Each score is labelled by its evidence. Direct means the candidate showed it. Inferred means the model read it between the lines. Insufficient means there was nothing to go on.
- In an interview evaluation, only direct evidence counts toward the score.
- With anonymized screening on, names and contact details are removed before the model reads anything.
- Documents are checked for hidden text and for instructions aimed at the AI. What is found is flagged on the candidate.
04The gap flag
- When the evidence does not cover an attribute, HireOSS says so instead of guessing. The attribute is marked as not assessed and named on the result.
- The result shows how much of the scorecard was covered, for example 3 of 5 attributes.
- Coverage limits the recommendation. In an interview evaluation, Strong Hire needs a score of at least 85% with 75% coverage, and Hire needs 75% with 60% coverage.
- Each gap comes with a follow-up question, so the next interview can close it.
05Mandatory attributes
- You can mark an attribute as mandatory. A weighted average lets strength in one place make up for weakness in another, and a mandatory attribute is the exception.
- A score below 2 out of 5 on a mandatory attribute caps the recommendation at No Hire.
- A mandatory attribute the evidence did not cover caps it at Maybe. Missing information is not a failure, but it cannot support a hire either.
- The cap only ever lowers the recommendation. The score stays as calculated, and the reason is shown next to it.
06The decision is yours
- A score and a recommendation are advice. A person makes every hiring decision.
- You can override any score or recommendation. The override is saved with your reason, next to the original.
- Who did what is recorded in the activity log.
